The Netherlands and Azerbaijan have developed economic ties across trade, investment and business cooperation. For companies looking to expand internationally, the relationship offers opportunities to connect businesses from Western Europe with one of the important markets in the South Caucasus.
According to the Embassy of Azerbaijan in the Netherlands, bilateral trade turnover reached US$235.7 million in 2024, while Dutch companies have established a significant presence in Azerbaijan. The embassy reports that 170 Dutch companies are registered in Azerbaijan, with 151 actively operating across sectors including industry, transport, construction and services.
For businesses and professionals, several sectors stand out as areas for potential cooperation.
1. Trade and Investment
Trade remains an important part of Netherlands–Azerbaijan economic relations.
Azerbaijan exports products including crude oil and fuel products, fruit and vegetables, and metal products to the Netherlands. The Netherlands supplies Azerbaijan with industrial equipment, technology, pharmaceutical products and machinery.
This creates opportunities for companies involved in importing, exporting, distribution, logistics and business services.
For companies entering a new market, understanding local regulations, finding reliable partners and developing professional networks can be just as important as identifying the right product or service.
2. Technology and Digital Business
Technology is another area with potential for expanding cooperation.
Azerbaijan is seeking to develop its non-oil economy and attract investment into areas beyond traditional energy industries. Recent investment discussions in Azerbaijan have included data centres and artificial intelligence technologies.
Dutch companies with experience in digital infrastructure, technology services, engineering and innovation may therefore find opportunities to explore partnerships with Azerbaijani businesses and institutions.
3. Agriculture and Food
Agriculture and food-related trade provide another area for business cooperation.
The Netherlands has extensive expertise in agricultural technology, food production, logistics and supply-chain management. Azerbaijan, meanwhile, has agricultural production and export activity involving products such as fruit and vegetables.
Potential cooperation can include agricultural technology, food processing, packaging, logistics, cold-chain solutions and knowledge exchange.
4. Logistics and Connectivity
Azerbaijan’s geographic position between Europe and Central Asia gives logistics an important role in its economic development.
The country has also identified increased transit capacity as part of its economic development plans. Recent investment announcements have included a target to expand transit cargo capacity to 25 million tonnes by 2030.
For Dutch companies working in logistics, infrastructure, transport technology and supply-chain management, developments in regional connectivity may create opportunities for cooperation.
5. Sustainable Business and Innovation
Sustainability is increasingly becoming part of international business strategy.
Opportunities can include renewable energy, energy efficiency, environmental technology, sustainable infrastructure and resource management.
For Netherlands–Azerbaijan business cooperation, sustainability can also provide a platform for companies to share technology, expertise and practical solutions.
